    They may have to pay a judgment out of their personal assets. In some states, a driver with an unsatisfied judgment resulting from a car accident will be unable to renew his driver’s license until the judgment has been paid. Uninsured drivers may well be forced into bankruptcy.

    This is cold comfort to someone who is involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. This adds a large amount to the average annual premium.
    Ironically, this can produce a Catch-22 situation: as premiums get higher it becomes even more tempting for some people not to take out car insurance.
